Critical Care
While any very ill patient with a serious fungal disease may require high dependency or critical care, the common fungal infections seen in critical care are:
>> Candidaemia
>> Candida peritonitis post-operatively
>> Invasive aspergillosis (especially COPD, cirrhosis or liver failure, corticosteroid therapy and immunocompromised patients)
Several fungal infections can cause severe sepsis and ARDS, mimicking bacterial sepsis, including:
>> Candidaemia
>> Disseminated histoplasmosis
>> Cryptococcal bloodstream infection
